If part of your job involves operating a motor vehicle, you may need to have a DOT drug screening. This might take place at a clinic or a doctor’s office. The site will need to be secure so only you and the staff are present. Keep reading to learn more about what you can expect.
Before the screening
Upon arrival at the site, the driver will need to present an identification card. The driver also has the right to ask for the ID of the collection staff member. Before the DOT drug screening, the driver will likely receive written information. This outlines each of the steps in the procedure.
In some cases, the driver will need to sign a consent form. However, this should not require the driver to waive their right to sue someone. Before starting, there should not be anyone else in the area except the staff and the driver.
What to expect
The driver will receive two clean bottles for the urine sample. These will have lids and caps on them and be sealed in a cover. The driver will likely need to leave behind bags and coats before producing the urine sample. However, the driver can keep their wallet.
In general, the driver has the right to fill the bottles in a private location. However, there may be exceptions if the staff believe the driver altered the samples. Anyone who observes the driver must be of the same gender. There are a few reasons a driver may need to be observed, including:
- The last test was abnormally diluted
- The driver is returning after a positive drug test
- There are signs of tampering
- The urine’s temperature is not right
For the DOT drug screening, the driver must produce at least 45 milliliters of urine. If the driver cannot do so, they might receive 40 ounces of fluid. Then the driver will need to stay at the collection site for as long as three hours. Once the sample has been given, it needs to stay in the driver’s sight at all times. If the sample ever leaves without being sealed, the driver has the right to request another test.
After the sample
A staff member will check the temperature of the urine no later than four minutes after. This must be done without contaminating the sample. At the end of the screening, the staff member will fill out seven copies of the Custody and Control Form. The driver will need to provide a phone number and name for this. Then the driver can sign the form and then initial the label on the bottle.
