If you have severe pain, you may have sciatica. This happens when your sciatic nerve is either irritated or injured. The nerve begins in the buttock area, and it is the biggest nerve you have. The roots of your nerves come together to create the sciatic nerve on the right and on the left. You have one nerve moving through your hips and legs on each side.

What is sciatica?

It is rare for the sciatic nerve to be actually injured. However, sciatica usually means that there is pain in the lower part of the back. It might radiate down the patient’s leg. That is similar to a nerve injury. It can result in pinching, irritation, or inflammation in the area. It can also feel like a compressed nerve in the back.

There could be severe or mild pain near the sciatic nerve. There could be pain along the buttocks, hips, or lower back. The pain may also radiate down the legs. Some patients may have numb legs or weakness in the feet and legs. It could feel like there are pins and needles in the area.

What does the pain feel like?

The pain may feel like it is burning or stabbing. It could feel like jolts of pain or sharp pain. The cause of the condition can determine what the pain feels like. The pain can come and go over time. It may also be there constantly. Often, the lower leg will have more pain than the back does.

It could feel worse when standing or sitting for a long time. And when the patient moves the upper body or stands, the pain may also worsen. Sudden movements, like sneezes and coughs, can worsen the condition. That can cause the pain to get worse.

The condition often affects only one of the patient’s legs. However, the condition may also happen in both legs at once. It depends on where the nerve gets pinched. The condition can also happen either gradually or all at once depending on what is causing the issue.

For example, if a disk is herniated, the pain could be sudden. However, if there is arthritis, it could happen more slowly. A herniated disk is one of the most common causes of the condition because it can place too much pressure on the root of the nerve.

The disks are responsible for keeping the vertebras cushioned. If there is too much pressure, then the disk can begin to bulge. That can put too much pressure on the nerve. The result is the painful condition of sciatica.
