Disc Injury Treatment From a Chiropractor
A disc injury is among the most common types of back ailments. Back pain is not rare among young adults, the middle-aged, and the elderly. These issues can be debilitating and affect people throughout their lives. If you have discomfort in your back and occasional loss of feeling in your extremities, you could have a disc condition. Your chiropractor can treat these concerns and help you to find the relief you need.
Understanding discs and disc injuries
The spine performs vital functions for everyone. Not only does it support the body, but it also protects the spinal cord. This series of nerves is a conduit between the brain and other parts of the body. In the spine are discs that act as shock absorbers.
The discs help the body move and enjoy flexibility. Accidents, wear and tear, and degeneration from age can injure the discs and cause intense pain. Every type of disc injury can be painful. Some of the most common types include a bulging disc, herniated disc, and slipped disc.
Pelvic blocking
One of the first techniques the chiropractor may try involves the patient’s pelvis. This method of treating a disc injury minimizes the pressure placed on the discs. It is designed to provide relief from discomfort and irritation in the lower back. The chiropractor has the patient lie on a table with a cushion under the pelvis. Doing this alters the individual’s posture to remove pressure on the nerves caused by the displaced disc. Pelvic blocking can also improve the function of the spinal nerves.
Spinal decompression
Spinal decompression is a non-invasive back treatment that uses an FDA-approved motorized table (activated by a computer system) to gently and gradually stretch the spine. The stretching, done while the patient lies on the motorized table, stretches the spine and reduces pressure on the compressed nerves. During the treatment, patients will feel their spine stretching and relaxing. The chiropractor will adjust the force as necessary based on information provided by the computer system.
Spinal adjustment
With any disc injury, the chiropractor will likely perform an adjustment. The goal is to identify restricted joints or discs that indicate abnormal movement. Different techniques are used in spinal adjustment: specific spinal manipulation, which uses gentle thrusting methods, flexion-distraction that involves mild, non-thrusting techniques, and instrument-assisted manipulation, which entails applying gentle force with a hand-held device. Patients may need to visit the office two to five times per week for some weeks. The length of a patient’s treatment will depend on the extent of the injury and how it is affecting the individual.
The right treatment for a disc injury
You suffer from back pain or sensations in your arms or legs, you may have a disc injury. It is essential that you identify the problem and seek treatment from a chiropractor. A chiropractor uses techniques such as spinal manipulation and manual therapy to relieve your pain and repair these issues.
